Retroreflection

Retroreflection is the ability of a material to reflect light back directly towards its source, for example towards a car's headlights. Thanks to it, a driver can see a pedestrian or cyclist wearing a reflective element from a much greater distance than without it.

How retroreflection is measured

The performance of a reflective material is given by the coefficient of retroreflection in units of cd/lx/m² (candela per lux per square metre). The higher the value, the brighter the material shines in the dark. A value of around 400 cd/lx/m² corresponds to a high-performance reflective film.

What to watch for with printed reflective items

  • Print reduces the reflective area. Choose a logo so that most of the reflective surface stays free.
  • The standard applies to the whole product. Products certified as personal protective equipment must comply with EN 17353 or EN ISO 20471:2013.
  • Promotional reflective items without certification improve visibility but are not personal protective equipment.
