Engraving or printing? Choose based on the item's material, the look of your logo and how the item will be used, not on which technology sounds more expensive. A full-colour design, subtle marking on metal and a personalised name may each call for a different solution.

First, decide what the marking needs to achieve
Does your logo need to match your brand colours exactly? Should the mark be discreet? Will names vary from one item to another? And will the item sit on a desk or travel in a backpack every day? These questions narrow down the options more effectively than a general request for the “most durable print”.
Start by sending us a link to the specific product and your artwork. The same technology may not suit two pens that look similar but have different finishes. If you are still choosing the item, tell us which requirements are non-negotiable: colour, intended use, budget or deadline.
How engraving and printing differ
With laser engraving of promotional items, the laser creates the design by acting on the surface. Standard engraving is therefore not a way to reproduce any corporate colour automatically. The appearance needs to be assessed on the specific material.
Laser marking is not one identical process for every surface, either. The laser equipment manufacturer Trotec explains how material affects the result and the differences between engraving, colour change and removing a surface layer. You do not need to choose the machine or method yourself when requesting a quote. What matters is describing the design you want and how the item will be used.
| Requirement | What to check | What to bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Brand colours are essentialThe logo needs to be recognisable in colour | A suitable printing technology and colour artwork | The colour of the item, any spot-colour requirements and the capabilities of the specific surface. |
| A subtle design on metalA discreet look rather than a large area of colour | Engraving suitable for the selected model | Check the contrast and final shade in a proof or with a sample beforehand. |
| Photographs or gradientsA full-colour visual | A printing method that supports the design and product in question | Do not assume the same solution will work on every plastic, textile and metal. |
| A different name on every itemIndividual personalisation | A suitable technology, data list and checking process | Confirm the price and feasibility. Personalisation is not automatically free. |
Three practical scenarios
A metal pen for a business partner
If you want a restrained look, consider engraving as one of the options. For gift pens and ballpoint pens, first check the selected model and the space available for the design. A long slogan may not be a sensible choice for a narrow barrel.
A clear symbol or name is better than a whole flyer shrunk down.A wooden or other suitable gift item
When browsing gift items for CO2 engraving, choose a specific product rather than relying on the material category alone. Ask us to assess the design and expected contrast. Do not treat the natural grain of wood as a uniform printing surface.
The surface is part of the final look, not a neutral background.A bold design for a company-wide event
If a particular shade of red or a multicolour design needs to be the main feature, tell us at the outset. Ask us to recommend the item and printing method together. Changing the item may be a better solution than accepting an unsatisfactory compromise on the logo.
Start with the result you want, then choose the technology. How to prepare your logo so we can make the right recommendation
Send us the original artwork you have available, ideally a vector file from your designer. A PDF file extension alone does not guarantee that the file contains anything other than raster data. If you only have an image, do not create a “vector version” simply by renaming the file. Send it to us for assessment.
Include the required colours and tell us whether you have a single-colour version of the logo. For different names, attach a clear list with one entry per line and check the spelling. Appoint one person to review and approve the proof.
- Size: assess the design at the actual size of the item.
- Details: flag fine lines, small text and brand clear-space requirements.
- Contrast: assess the result on the chosen item colour.
- Variable data: ask us to confirm how names will be matched to specific items.

Compare durability and cost without making absolute claims
Do not rely on statements such as “engraving is indestructible” or “printing always survives the dishwasher”. Tell us how the item will be used, handled and cleaned, and ask us to confirm a suitable combination of product, marking and care. For an important order, ask whether a physical sample is available and what it would cost.
Likewise, you cannot decide without a quote that one method will always be cheaper. Compare the same quantity, design size, number of print positions and any personalisation. Include packaging and delivery in your brief so that the quotes cover the complete order.
Place your order without unnecessary delays
Prepare a link to the product, the quantity, your logo, your preferred type of marking and the required delivery date. If a requirement is only a preference, say so. This makes it easier to find an alternative if the original combination is unsuitable.
For standard orders, allow approximately 3–4 weeks from order to delivery. Production usually takes 10–14 days, but you also need to allow time for artwork, approval and delivery. We can confirm the actual deadline only once we know the product, technology and quantity.
Frequently asked questions
Can engraving reproduce a logo in an exact corporate colour?
With standard engraving, the appearance depends on the material and surface. If an exact corporate colour is essential, include it in your brief and ask us to recommend a suitable technology. Do not assume that any colour can be achieved automatically.
Do I need to know the right technology before requesting a quote?
No. Send us the product, or an idea of what you are looking for, along with your logo and how the item will be used. We can help assess a suitable marking method and prepare the information you need to make a decision.
Is engraving automatically more expensive than printing?
Do not judge the price by the name of the technology alone. It depends on the specific order, quantity, area and any personalisation. The useful comparison is between two options specified on the same basis.
Can you make a single personalised item?
TAEDA offers production from a single item for selected products and technologies. We will confirm the minimum quantity and whether different names are possible for the specific product.
