What is Pad Printing and How It Works

Pad printing (also called tampo print) is a printing technique that uses a flexible silicone pad to transfer ink from a cliché plate to the printed object. The process begins with creating a metal or polymer cliché with an etched design. Ink is applied to the cliché, excess is removed with a doctor blade, and the pad then "picks up" the ink from the cliché and transfers it to the product.

The main advantage of this method is its ability to print on curved, concave, or convex surfaces, which other techniques cannot handle. This is why pad printing dominates for plastic pens, cylindrical power banks, round USB drives, or mugs. The technology enables precise multi-color printing with color registration (alignment) accurate to 0.1 mm.

Materials Suitable for Pad Printing

Pad printing is extremely versatile and works on almost all materials. It is most commonly used on hard plastics (ABS, PS, PP), where it achieves excellent adhesion and sharpness. Metal surfaces like stainless steel, aluminum, or brass require special inks, but the result is durable and elegant.

Another plus is economic efficiency for medium to larger quantities – from 50 pieces, pad printing is often cheaper than digital printing.

Pad printing also enables the use of special inks – metallic, fluorescent, or UV reactive. The inks have excellent opacity, so they work even on dark backgrounds without underprinting. For comparison with other methods: engraving is more permanent but single-color, while UV full-color printing handles photorealistic designs but only on flat surfaces.

The order begins with product selection and sending your logo. Our graphic designers convert the logo to a format suitable for pad printing and create color separations. This step is free and includes up to 30 minutes of graphic work per product. Cliché production is included in the printing price.

After preview approval, we produce the cliché and perform a test print, which we photographically document for your final confirmation. Standard production takes 7–10 working days, express option is available from 3 days. Minimum order varies by product – for pens usually from 100 pieces, for some items from 50 pieces. How many colors can be printed with pad printing?
We typically print 1–4 colors. Each additional color requires a separate cliché and printing pass, which affects production time. For full-color designs, we recommend UV digital printing.

How durable is pad printing?
Very durable – the print withstands normal mechanical stress, hand washing, and UV radiation. It's not dishwasher-safe (for mugs we recommend sublimation). With quality inks, the print lasts several years of intensive use.

Yes, pad printing with opaque inks can print white and other light colors on black, dark blue, or red backgrounds. The ink has excellent opacity.

Do you charge for cliché production?
No, cliché production is included in the printing price. We store the cliché for any reorder needs, so repeat orders are even more cost-effective.
